HHUMC began in 1966 as a 20 bed facility which was primarily a small surgery and maternity hospital. Today HHUMC has acquired more advanced medical technologies and expanded and diversified its medical departments to include cardiovascular and thoracic surgery departments. The first cardiac transplant operation in the Middle East was performed at Hammoud Hospital in 1999
