PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Office of International Medicine Programs offers an intensive two-week (June 4 - 15, 2018) Healthcare Leadership Program for hospital leaders from around the world in Washington, DC, the United States Capital and home to the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). This program provides hospital leaders with a comparative perspective on hospital leadership and management, exposure to areas of clinical interest, and hands-on activities designed to provide participants with the leadership content necessary to improve organizational effectiveness. This program includes seminars, interactive workshops, case studies, tours, and meetings with GW Hospital leaders and healthcare institutions in Washington, DC. All sessions will be delivered in English.
THEME 1: Management and Leadership
The overall emphasis of the program will be on hospital management and leadership. The program structure will include morning seminars and workshops on management and leadership with case studies, tours, and meetings taking place in the afternoons. An illustrative list of possible seminars and workshops is as follows:

THEME 2: Public Health, Health Policy, and Clinical Topics
The program will provide an introduction to important public health issues relevant to hospital leaders such as policy, awareness, and prevention. These sessions will be introductory in nature and specifically designed for hospital leaders including thosewith medical training. The program will also include seminars on clinical areas, delivered by physicians and researchers investigating these areas. Topics may include:
- Public Health: policy, awareness, prevention
- Health Policy
- Health Services Management
- Smoking cessation
- Environment and health (pollution, food safety, etc.)
- GW Cancer Center
- Emergency Medicine
- Cardiovascular Health
- Communicable diseases (viral hepatitis, TB, HIV/AIDS)
- Aging population
THEME 3: Study Tours
The program will include tours of hospital and medical school facilities, as well as the National Institutes of Health, and select healthcare associations and policy-making organizations. The program may also include tours of important historical and cultural sites.Tours may include:
- GW Hospital
- GW Cancer Institute
- GW Clinical Learning and Simulation Skills Center
- National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Library of Medicine
- DC-area sites (White House, Smithsonian Institute, monuments, etc.)
- The Joint Commission (health care accreditation organization)
- American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA)
- World Health Organization
- World Bank
LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES
At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:
- Use advanced skills to more effectively lead their hospitals.
- Discuss at least two theories of leadership and apply these theories to healthcare organizations
- Analyze the three major leadership perspectives
- Determine their own personality preference and apply that information to leading others
- Compare and contrast four contemporary viewpoints on healthcare leadership
- Discuss the key organizational attributes of healthcare organizations including hospitals, ambulatory care centers, physician practices and post-acute settings.
- Demonstrate the understanding of the relationship between the governing board, administrative staff and clinical staff
- Discuss approaches to public health including policy, awareness, and prevention.
ELIGIBILITY
- Participants must hold a leadership role in a hospital setting
- Participants must have a demonstrated interest in improving hospital management and leadership practices

IMP’s goal is to provide life-changing opportunities to build the capacity of other countries and share the latest advances in medicine and healthcare. As a pioneer in international medical education, training, and research, IMP has developed, coordinated, and completed over 150 projects in over 50 countries, touching the lives of more than 12,000 healthcare professionals, students, and patients around the globe.
Clinical Strengths. The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, in partnership with the GW Hospital, and the Medical Faculty Associates offers advanced specified professional medical care services.
