Introduction
The Office of International Medicine Programs (IMP) collaborates with medical schools globally to provide clinical elective rotations at GW for international medical students, as well as GW students abroad. These long-term exchanges have allowed hundreds of medical students to enrich and broaden their medical education in a healthcare system different from their own since 2005.
To participate, GW students must have completed all of their core clinical clerkships with GW SMHS and be aware of the GW SMHS’ Policies and Procedures for International Experiences and Electives. Most eligible students interested in participating in an international elective enroll in IDIS 352, a four-week elective in a clinical specialty at an academic teaching hospital or clinical abroad, alongside medical students from that country. Experiences vary greatly depending on the type of clinical setting, organization, and location. International affiliated sites are carefully screened for academic quality, suitability for medical student education, and student safety abroad.
Students who wish to pursue an elective at one of IMP's partner institutions must be nominated to the institution by IMP. Students should not reach out to any faculty or coordinators at the partner institutions directly. Every site has limited capacity for the number of GW students it can accept per academic year and therefore nominations are granted on a first-come first-serve basis. To learn more about the process of being nominated to an international site, please contact Program Manager Rebecca Zacuto at rebecca [dot] zacuto [at] email [dot] gwu [dot] edu (rebecca[dot]zacuto[at]email[dot]gwu[dot]edu). Final acceptance into an international elective is determined by the host institution.

Students have the option to pursue opportunities with non-affiliated international sites. In those cases, students must submit a separate proposal at least three months in advance, to the Course Director, Dr. Huda Ayas. Please contact IMP at impinfo [at] gwu [dot] edu (impinfo[at]gwu[dot]edu) for proposal requirements.
